Objective: To investigate the expressions and significance of zinc finger protein 139 (ZNF139), MMP-2, MMP-7, TIMP-1 in primary tumors (PT) and local lymph node metastases (LNMs) of gastric carcinoma.

Methods: The expressions of ZNF139, MMP-2, MMP-7, TIMP-1 were determined with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry in 46 paired PT and LNMs of gastric cancer.

Results: The expressions of ZNF139, MMP-2, MMP-7 were higher in LNMs than in PTs, whereas expression of TIMP-1 was lower in LNMs than in PTs (all P<0.05). In PT there was positive correlativity between ZNF139 and MMP-2, ZNF139 and MMP-7 protein (both P<0.05). In LNMs, positive correlativity was found between ZNF139 and MMP-7 (P<0.05), and no other statistical correlativity was found in LNMs.

Conclusions: ZNF139 may be involved in invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer by regulating some genes.

Keywords: Gastric cancer; zinc finger protein 139; invasion; metastasis
