Objective: To explore the feasibility and skills of laparoscopy assisted total gastrectomy (LATG) for advanced gastric cancer.

Methods: The clinical data of 46 cases with advanced gastric cancer undergoing LATG from October 2011 to April 2013 were analyzed retrospectively.

Results: Except for 1 patient that required conversion to open surgery, LATG has been performed successfully in 45 patients. The mean operation time was (261.1±30.8) minutes, with mean blood loss of (155.9±31.6) mL and mean lymph nodes retrieved of 25.7±7.1. There was no postoperative death, and the morbidity rate was acceptable. After a mean follow-up of (10.6±3.9) months, only one case has a recurrence.

Conclusions: LATG is feasible, safe and effective in the clearance of advanced gastric cancer. However, surgical skills should be mastered in the procedure.
