Objective: To study the relation between vasculogenic mimicry (VM) and tumor metastasis and TNM stage and prognosis in gastric adenocarcinoma

Methods: 100 paraffinembedded human GAC samples were collected, with detailed follow-up and clinicopathologic data. CD34/PAS double staining and CD31/PAS double staining, immunohistochemical staining of CK8&18 and laminin were performed to validate the exsistence of VM in GAC.

Result: The expression of HIF-1αand MMP-2 were both higher in the VM group than non-VM group. The survival rates of the VM group were shorter than that of non-VM group with a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.

Conclusions: VM has a more frequent occurrence in the poorly differentiated GAC and is a potential indicator of poor prognosis for GAC. HIF-1α and MMP-2 may play a role in VM formation in GAC.

Keywords: Vasculogenic mimicry (VM); gastric adenocarcinoma; HIF-1α; MMP-2
